Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum
The history of Japanese Sake and Fushimi's sake-brewing district

Fushimi, the town used to be the stage for the prominent figures during the late Edo period like Sakamoto Ryoma and Shinsengumi (The New Squad, a special police force organized by the military government), is also famous for being the town of sake. The scene of the rows of graceful willow trees with the distinctive white walls of traditional sake breweries has been one of Kyoto’s representative sceneries. The neighborhood near Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum is of Shirakabe Dozo (houses with walls built of white earth) and has preserved an abundance of precious documents related to sake brewing. Hence, this is a place where you can delve deep into the history of Japanese Sake. After the visit of the sake brewery, you can enjoy a tasting of the sake products such as Ginjo sake and plum wine at “Kikisake-Dokoro (Sake Tasting Place)” and the sake stocked here is very popular as souvenirs.

Since the 17th century, a low temperature environment has been regarded as preferable for sake brewing and thus brewing sake during cold winters, the method known as Kanzukuri, because of the advancement in technology, sake is made all year round. Gekkeikan was the first to conduct four season brewing in the industry and is known as a pioneer of technological innovation.

When it is not in winter, there are seasonal flowers and Jikkokubune Boat Ride for you to enjoy around the sake brewery.
Please enjoy the atmosphere of the sake brewery together with the floating scent of steamed rice or fermented rice.
