The oldest shrine in Kyoto surrounded by a forest

The official name is Kamomioya-jinja Shrine. It is one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto, located in the northern part of Tadasu-no-mori Forest. During the Aoi Matsuri Festival held annually on May 15, the graceful scroll painting unrolls from the Imperial Palace via the Shimogamo-jinja Shrine and then expands to the Kamigamo-jinja Shrine. It is said that by footbathing in the Mitarashigawa River during the Mitarashi Matsuri often held in July, one could prevent losing weight in summer and illnesses.
