"Nankiri Fudo Myoo" saves one from difficulties
Overcome Your Sufferings and Eat Some Pizza
April 13, 2017

Monk in a small, beautiful temple on top of a mountain builds his own brick oven and serves you 3 kinds of handmade pizza. If that sentence doesn’t intrigue you, I don’t know what else you’d like to do for fun. The hall where the carving of Zao Gongen is displayed is pretty cool if you’re into Nara period statues, but I’d come here for his ‘Overcoming Suffering’ nankiri pizza - pesto, pumpkin, potato and cheese. His ‘Little Monk’ kobozu pizza with onion, peppers and cheese is tasty too. This does take planning. This is not a pizza you can waltz in and order because it takes him 2 hours just to heat up the oven. You’ll need to make a reservation at least 2 days in advance, with a minimum order of 2 pizzas for your group (or yourself - I’m not judging). But it’s totally worth it.

I live in Kyoto and think incessantly about food, both making and eating it. You can find my occasional musings about food at furochan.wordpress.com. Or more often showing you the places I've been to and what I've eaten on Instagram @furochan_eats. Y

Although a bit far from the main street, this small temple is beautiful in both spring and autumn. There is a carving and painting of Emperor Godaigo, who famously fled to Yoshino to set up a rival court in the Kamakura period. The fierce and finely carved Zao Gongan figure with his glassy third eye is worth the trip alone.
