Tenran Dai (observation deck)
You can view the scenery from Rokko Mountain as well as the night view
Experience a priceless panorama
March 20, 2017

This observatory offers a spectacular panoramic view of Kobe, areas of Osaka, and one can see as far as Wakayama. Indeed, it is proclaimed to be a 10 million dollar view! Hyperbole aside, it is stunning and worth the jaunt up the mountain. And if you are blessed with the right conditions, you may witness a breathtaking sunset. It was named Tenran Observatory in commemoration of an auspicious visit by Emperor Showa in 1981. It is mere steps from the Rokko Cable Car station, and the Tenran Café next to it offers pleasant refreshments, where you can linger to enjoy the view.

I’m from Toronto, Canada and have lived in Japan for 17 years, first in Kobe and now in Ashiya. I am passionate about food, wine, sake, art, books, movies and travel. I enjoy studying Japanese and French, and in my free time, I practice and teach Shotokan karate.

Retro-designed cable cars take you up to the Rokko Mountain. The Tenran Dai deck overlooks the dynamic views of Osaka Plain Field and Wakayama Prefecture in distance. Showa Emperor also visited and enjoyed the stunning views from the deck.
